Books Written by Amos Hawkins

My father has written several books on various subjects. These are all works of fiction or historical fiction. Since they have not gone through a formal editing process, you will find odd errors throughout - such as "Allan O'neal" in one chapter and "Allen O'neill" in the next. Let me know if you find anything like that and I'll try to correct them.

These manuscripts were originally written in the mid 1990's and were stored on floppy disks and small hard drives. Much was lost over time thanks to hard disk crashes and Windows 95 thinking it was OK to save a link to the original file on the backup floppy disk instead of a copy of the actual file. So if you have been wondering why it took me so long to post this, now you know. I have been scavenging files from my father's computer and trying to figure out which ones are the most current in order to piece together a PDF which is available below. At least with Carolyn's Journal, I had a published hardcopy as reference to get everything straight. The other stories were never published, so I will put out what I have as time permits.

Carolyn's Journal

Carolyn's Journal depicts the harsh surroundings, the rough working conditions and the despair of the girls and women in an iron furnace community in the early 1800's. Carolyn faithfully recorded her life of joys and sorrows in her journal. Her love and simple faith in God built a bridge over the quagmire of despair and self pity. She faithfully recorded her journey from Boston to England and Prussia and through the virgin forests to southern Ohio and of her life there.

Our Daughter: The Dumpster Kid

Imagine living in a Palm Beach dumpster for 2 ½ years and surviving on food that has been thrown into the dumpster! This story is set in the 1990's and the main character, Ann, did just that after she was released from foster care. Ann had been under foster care for ten years and in seven different homes always secretly yearning for parents who would love and care for her! Her last foster parents beat her. Smelling like a skunk, Ann went looking for a job so she could rent an apartment. She was too young to work, but the man she asked for a job let her shower and clean up. His wife bought her new clothes and took her home with her. Later they adopted Ann and another girl as their daughters and showered them with love and care.

Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain tells the story about a wealthy Christian family making a home in the wilderness. While they are generous to all, some seek to harm them. The story starts out like a fairy tale, but quickly takes a turn for the worse. Their firstborn daughter Annie encounters a huge grizzly bear while playing in the woods. She tells her teacher who does not believe her. The family has made many friends among the townspeople who have helped the family recover from their times of sorrow.

Letters from a Union Soldier

This is not a book of fiction, but a collection of personal letters written by and to Charles Loomis Eaton who was a soldier fighting for the union army during the US Civil war. Charles was the adopted son of one of my ancestors, Dr. Horace Eaton. This is a difficult read due to excessive bad spelling, grammar and a total lack of punctuation. This document was intentionally preserved that way for historical purposes. Also, some overly sensitive people may be offended by the use of certain words which were just words back then before they were vilified in modern times.
